Off to San Francisco to meet with Thoreauvians

He made it (by train) to Red Wing, Minnesota, but no further West.  I think Emerson got to Yosemite, and met John Muir, but Ralph wasn’t an outdoors man.

Emerson is said to have claimed that “This valley is the only place that comes up to the brag about it, and exceeds it.” Like most semi-famous exclamations, I can’t locate a proper source for this. But if you visit Yosemite you will see this writ large in several places. The Park Service, at least, is satisfied as to the authenticity.

A similar sentiment is attributed to Mark Twain. But over time all things are eventually attributed to Twain on the Internet.
